A bright red male Northern Cardinal sits on a fence post on a winter's day at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Indiana. State bird of Indiana and a few other states, they can brighten any day.
The northern cardinal is a bird in the genus Cardinalis; it is also known colloquially as the redbird, common cardinal or just cardinal. It can be found in southern eastern Canada, through the eastern United States from Maine to Minnesota to Texas, and south through Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala.
